§ Many people have enjoyed singing at some stage in their lives but let it lapse for all sorts of good reasons. Well now is your opportunity to re-vitalise that hobby. Or maybe you currently sing but would like to try a different voice part, or have a go at singing in 4 part unaccompanied harmony.  The different voice parts are explained on the "Join Us" page.

§  On this 3 week course, you will learn about developing good vocal technique, sing with other like-minded students, and hopefully have lots of fun!! And you can do all this without being able to read music (we provide audio teaching material).

How it will work

§ We will meet on a Wednesday from 7:30pm to 10:00pm for three weeks along with members of the Harmony InSpires chorus.

§ Over the period of the course we will learn "All That Jazz" from the musical Chicago:

§ At the start of the first week we will carry out a simple voice assessment to determine your natural vocal range.  We don’t want to strain anyone’s voice by putting her in an inappropriate voice part. You will not be asked to sing on your own for this!

§ Each week will include the same course elements, albeit in a slightly different format.

  • A warm up session.   We need to prepare our bodies, voices and minds for singing, so this warm up will include some physical, vocal and mental exercises so we are ready to sing.
  • A craft session.  Each week we will address a different aspect of singing and do some exercises so that we can feel what happens and understand the need for it.
  • A section rehearsal. A “section” is one of the 4 different voice parts.  This will give you the opportunity to get to know others in your ‘section’, and it is an effective way to iron out any difficulties with the notes etc for the song any one may be having.
  • On the “risers”.  Everyone back together again where we put the song together and try out some of our craft.
  • A question and answer session – just to make sure that if you have any questions there is an opportunity to voice them.  Please do not feel you have to wait until this session to ask questions – all the tutors will be happy to answer questions as we go along.  This session is there in case of any outstanding queries you have in your mind…

 And afterwards . . .

What you do with your new found skills is, of course, up to you.  We just hope that you enjoy our course and that you don’t let the time you spent with us go to waste. The vocal techniques you will work on are applicable to many styles of singing.

It is our fond hope that some of you would like to follow this course up by coming along to join the group of us who already sing together on a Wednesday evening.

We are a very friendly group of females who are keen to share with more people our enthusiasm for 4 part a cappella singing. We also have a strong desire to sing as well as we can and work to improve our performance. We do therefore ask for commitment to learning songs outside of rehearsals and attendance at as many of our weekly rehearsals as possible, and occasional weekend rehearsals. If you enjoy the singing as much as we do, motivation should not be a problem, but if you have a busy lifestyle that would prevent regular attendance, we may not be the choir for you.
