About Us

Harmony Inspires is a ladies a capella chorus, which sings 4-part harmony; performing songs in a wide variety of styles - including songs from musicals, pop classics and beautiful ballads. We formed in 2007, and have since grown to about 50 members. We come from all walks of life but are united in an enjoyment of music making.

We love to perform and we participate in various sing-outs and competitions throughout the year, including the national convention of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS).

In addition to having fun, we work hard to improve our singing and performance regularly receive tuition from top coaches   Since early 2013, under the direction of Peter Cookson (see below), we have gone from strength to strength, our abilities have improved and our numbers have grown.

We meet weekly on Wednesday evenings, 7.30–10.00pm, at Appleton Village Hall.

Have you enjoyed singing at some stage in your life but let it lapse? Or maybe you currently sing but would like to try a different voice part, or have a go at 4-part unaccompanied harmony? We can help you re-discover your voice or learn new skills. The ability to read music is not essential as we provide learning tracks to help you to learn a song quickly.

We welcome new members to join us in our hobby and would love the chorus to keep growing so that as many ladies as possible can have the fun we have.

Why not give it a try? – see how to join us

Our director - Peter Cookson

Music has been an integral part of Peter's life ever since he learned to play the piano at the age of six. Over the years the guitar and traditional choral singing have been his musical outlets before he took up barbershop in 1999.

With Reading Barbershop Harmony Club (Thames Valley Chorus) he won 3 bronze and one silver medal in the BABS national chorus competition. He was a member of the music team, bass section leader and for 2 years was the Club Chairman. He directed the chorus in the 2015 national championship

While working in Manchester, Peter sang with Bolton Barbershop Harmony Club (Cottontown Chorus) winning gold medals in the 2011 and 2013 BABS chorus competitions. He also competed with them at the International competition in Philadelphia in 2010. He was a member of the music team, and regularly ran the vocal warm ups for the chorus.

To further develop his barbershop knowledge Peter has attended BABS Harmony College several times attending the choral, music arranging, vocal coaching and directing streams. He has benefitted from the tuition of American coaches including Jim Henry, Royce Ferguson and Rob Campbell.

Peter is currently the Chairman of the British Association of Barbershop Singers and a Council Member of Making Music.

At Harmony InSpires Peter is continually striving to develop the capabilities of the chorus members and to enhance the enjoyment of audiences and chorus members while maintaining a spirit of fun and companionship.
